On the fringe of downtown Rochester, a family-owned business that has been a community staple for nearly eight decades is preparing for its next chapter. Collins Feed & Seed, a local institution originally established by the Stoppel brothers in 1946, is set to transform its business model while maintaining its rich historical legacy.

I had the opportunity to visit with the business owner Jon Zimmerman he shared the following. "While our retail store will be transitioning away from pet food and other products, we're thrilled to announce our evolution into "We Feed Birds," a specialized wild bird feeding service." This transition will lead to the store closure later in 2025. Jon and his team look to work on the e-commerce portion of the business and find a new business to eventually rent the storefront.

Jon and his family purchased the business and building from Randy Collins and his family in 2020. The legacy of this being a family owned businesses is part of what drew Jon to the desire to purchase this business.

The cornerstone of our transition will be maintaining the beloved Randy Collins signature products, including our famous Cardinal birdseed blend. This custom blend, which has earned a devoted following over decades, will continue to be available to our loyal Rochester customers through a convenient delivery service.

Starting this spring 2025, Collins Feed & Seed's retail location will begin its slow transition. However, we're committed to ensuring this change is seamless for our valued customers:

* Our signature bird seed blends will be available through We Feed Birds

* Customers can order online at we work to optimize our website

* Local delivery options will be available for a nominal fee

* Our professional bird feeder maintenance service will continue and expand

Jon shared "As We Feed Birds, we're excited to focus entirely on what we do best - helping our community enjoy the wonder of wild birds. Our new business model will allow us to provide specialized, full-service bird feeding solutions while maintaining the quality and personal touch that Collins Feed & Seed customers have come to expect over the past 60 years."

So what this will mean for the property is Realty Growth has been hired to begin the marketing process of helping the next business secure this extremely convenient location. Justin Collopy shared below in a YouTube video a tour for you to see the property that is now being marketed for lease.
