Rochester Downtown to See Riverfront and 6th Street Bridge Upgrade

The new bridge will feature three lanes of traffic, including one eastbound lane and two westbound lanes, with a dedicated left-turn lane onto South Broadway. Beyond vehicular traffic, the project emphasizes pedestrian and bicycle access, incorporating dedicated pathways, shaded seating areas, and public art installations.

Community engagement has been central to the project. More than 30 virtual meetings have been held to gather public input, and local artists have been invited to design 14 large metal panels for the bridge around the theme "The Future of Rochester." The selected artist or team will receive a $10,000 stipend and work closely with architects, engineers, and community members to bring the project to life.

As of September 2025, the project has completed its preliminary design phase and is moving forward with 60% design plans under review. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has received the bridge plans for approval, and the city is in the process of acquiring necessary properties to keep the project on track.

The 6th Street Bridge project represents more than just a new crossing it is a step toward safer streets, improved riverfront access, and enhanced downtown development, all while celebrating Rochester’s unique community and culture.

Nearly $20 million of the project’s $36 million budget will be covered by a 2022 federal raise grant, with $10 million from Destination Medical Center and $6 million from the state.
