Historic North Broadway Dairy Queen Reopens Under New Ownership

Rochester’s iconic North Broadway Dairy Queen has officially reopened, welcoming back loyal customers under new local ownership.

Originally opened on June 20, 1947, the North Broadway Dairy Queen is widely recognized as one of the oldest in Minnesota. It was founded by Leroy Spratte and stayed in the Spratte family for over 70 years, with Tim and Diana Spratte operating the stand until their retirement earlier this year. Their departure marked the end of an era and the beginning of another.

The iconic ice cream stand resumed operations under the direction of the Pierson family. Nels and Nicole Pierson, along with their son Mardoche, are now leading the charge to preserve and revitalize the beloved location. The soft reopening began Wednesday, July 16, with a limited “cone-only” menu designed to give new staff time to adjust and reconnect with the community.

Though ownership has changed, the commitment to tradition remains strong. The stand still features its classic walk-up window and vintage charm hallmarks of what made it a summer staple for generations.

As one of Minnesota’s longest-running Dairy Queen locations, the North Broadway stand holds a special place in the hearts of locals who remember stopping by after baseball games, family outings, or just to cool down on a hot July afternoon.

Now, after a brief hiatus, that tradition continues.
